Biography

Andrew Gilson was born in 1628,[1][2] and was an early Virginia colonist, at least from the 1650s.[3] He was a fairly wealthy man from his land holdings and participated regularly in civil affairs, having been a justice of Lancaster County, then "Old" Rappahannock County, and finally Stafford County as these various counties were formed. He was also the High Sheriff of Rappahannock in 1660.[4]

Andrew paid taxes in Lancaster County, Virginia Colony, based on his labor force. The county assessed him, as a gentleman, for four tithables, 24 Oct 1653,[5] for four tithables, 6 Feb 1655,[6] for four tithables, 7 Dec 1655,[7] and again for eight tithables, 5 Nov 1656.[8]

In 1664 Andrew married Behethland (Bernard) Dade, granddaughter of Capt. Robert Behethland, and widow of Maj. Francis Dade.[9]

Dade, Francis, 29 December 1663. "William Storke aged 39 swears that 1 May 1663 that Mr. Francis Dade coming out of England in the last shipping in the 'Maryland,' merchant whereof Capt. Miles Cook is Master, and falling sick at sea did make his verbal will in these words, that he gave his whole estate to his wife and she to have the tuition of their children until of age. Assignment from Edward Griffith of Mulberry Island, James River, to Francis Dade son of Major Francis Dade, deceased, mentions other brothers and sisters of said Francis the heir and in case of their mortality the said land to revert to Mrs. Berthland Dade late wife of Major Francis Dade."[10]

Andrew Gilson died in 1698 and left a relatively detailed will proved in Stafford Co., Virginia.[29] The will names his son Thomas, a son [in law] Storke (widower of Behethland), and a son [in law] and daughter Buckner, who have not been positively identified but are presumably related to the Buckners who lived near him in Stafford (e.g. Phillip Buckner (d. 1700)).

J.B.C. Nicklin wrote a monograph on him in 1930 and at the time was unable to determine any firm information about his origins, which is somewhat puzzling since Gilson was a man of wealth and position even from his first appearances in colonial records. Nicklin estimated a birth year of 1628, (Dorman gives his birthdate as 1636.)[30] probably based on the idea that Gilson must have been at least 21 years of age when he obtained his first land grant in 1650. By 1652, he was even sitting on the court of Lancaster County, so any birth date after 1631 can be ruled out with high confidence. Gilson's will had not yet been discovered in Nicklin's time, so the article lacks some important information.[4]
