Deed from John and Catherine Goad to John Hightower, October 3, 1727

From Pilgrims and Bootleggers by Dawn Barnard Eskins:

Note: His birth is recorded in the local parish records. As the eldest known surviving son, he was executor of his father's estate in 1734. Local records report him conveying 15 acres to John Petty on 2 November1726 (Deed Book 8, page 263, Richmond Co., VA). 180 acres were deeded toJohn Hightower on 3 October 1727 (Deed Book 8, Page 362, Richmond Co.,VA). Following his father's death, another 80 acres were deeded to John Hightower on 21 October 1738 (Deed Book 9, page 588, Richmond Co., VA).He evidently left Richmond Co. in 1738 since the births of his children had been recorded there until that year. It is uncertain when he moved directly to the area that was eventually to become Bedford County, but he was definitely settled there by 1754 when the county was formed. He acquired land on the north side of the Staunton (now, Roanoke) River, just across the river from what is now Pittsylvania Co. He amassed ownership of 268 acres. In his will, dated 23 July 1771 and proved on 23 July 1771 (Will Book 1, Page 132), he tried to leave most of his sons some land and to tie up the property at the same time. John, the eldest son, was left no land but the three younger sons were each devised a tract for their lifetime with remainder to a certain of their sons. Thus,William was given a tract that, upon his death, was to go to his son, John. Abraham was given a tract which was to then go to his son, James. Robert was left a tract which would pass to his son, Thomas. This manner of devising his property was carried over into the disposition of the personal estate, as specified cows were left to the sons until such time the favored grandsons reached age twenty-one. John named his wife as Ann Goad and left her all of the estate that she had when they had married. This suggests that his first wife, and probably the mother of all his children, Catherine, had died earlier.

From Chuck Lindwall at GenForum/Bennett #6815.

In the 1767 list of Pennsylvania Tithables, a Charles Goad is shown in a pairing with William Bennett. There were several William Bennets, so not clear which one this is but it could be the William b 1703. This particular line goes from Hannah to her father John to his father Abraham to Richard Goad (Goode) born in Cornwall in about 1630. They settled in North Farnham Parish in what was then Richmond County but now may be part of Middlesex County.

From Broderbund WFT Vol. 10, ed 1, tree #1569, date of import to Rebecca Davis: Feb 22, 2000.

Served as executor of his father's estate. It is unknown if John came directly to Bedford Co. upon leaving Richmond. He might have lived in Northern VA, but he was well settled in Bedord by the county was formed in 1754. John's land was on the north side of the Stauton River, now known as the Roanoke River, just across the river from the present-day Pittsylvania Co. John purchased 125 acres from the estates of Richard Randolph on 27 Sep. 1760, (Deed Book 1, page 351, Bedford.
It is believed by some historians that Ann Isham is the mother of John's last three children, but "The Register of North Farnham Parish 1663-1814 and Lunenburg Parish 1783-1800 Richmond Co, VA", compiled and published by George H.S. King shows Katherine's date of death as 23 May 1741.
