Lois Jettie Goodwin was born on 11 June 1923 in Cannon, Grayson County, Texas, United States. The date used here was taken from Social Security records and varies by one year from that used on her unsourced FindAGrave memorial.^[1][2] She was the daughter of Rosia Hawkins Goodwin (1882 - 1954) and Claudia V Gilchrist (~1893 - 1984)]].^[3]

She was enumerated in the household of her parents on both the 1930 and 1940 United States Censuses. In 1930 they were living in Van Zandt County, Texas. In 1940 they were living in rural Angelina County, Texas.
