Biography

Daniel Moodie was born in 1789. He moved 200 miles north from Croyden, New Hampshire to Russeltown, Beauharnois (Quebec) which just borders the United States. An 1888 history of Russeltown mentions Daniel as one of the earliest setters in the area.[1] An excerpt from that work:

  • "The only authentic record of these first-comers is contained in the narrative of the son of one of them, Willis C. Roberts: ...My father was the first take up land between him [being David Stockwell, lot 9, 4th range] and the flats but he [my father] soon had neighbors, for Robert Hunks squatted on 173 and Daniel Gordon on the opposite side of the road in 1818. In that year the settlers along the track, for it was not a road that led to Franklin, were as follows: East of St Remi the settlers were French; where the village is now, lived Dewey, Struthers and Robt. Dunn, and west of them the woods were unbroken until Beechridge."

By 1851 Daniel held 100 acres in Russelltown.[2]

Daniel Moodie Gordon died in 1863 and was buried at the Russeltown Church Cemetery in Beauharnois, Canada East.[3]
