Margaret (Gutsell) Scott lived in Winton, Southland, New Zealand.

Margaret Esther (also Ethel) Gutsell was born on 11 October 1886^[1] at Winton, Southland, New Zealand, and her birth was registered at Winton^[2]. She was the daughter of George John Gutsell and Mary Ann Lampert.

She married George Edward Garth on 26 October 1904^[3]. George and Margaret had one son and six daughters.

In 1911 she was living at 57 Jackson Street, Invercargill with her husband George Edward a labourer, both registered on the Invercargill Electoral Roll^[18].

In early April 1916 Edward was Involved in an accident at the Macpherson Bros sawmill at Otautau where he worked, when a flitch from the bench struck him in the abdomen^[19]. He returned to work, but his condition worsened, and he died on 14 April 1916 aged 35 years^[20]. A post-mortem showed that the accident was the cause of his death, his having suffered an internal injury^[21]. Margaret was left to bring up the six children including the one that she was pregnant with.

She a widow had moved to 51 Tramway Road, Invercargill by 1919^[22]. In 1922 she was living at 14 Gordon Street, Invercargill^[23]. In 1931 she was living at 95 Grace Street, and her daughter Priscilla was now listed on the Invercargill General Electoral Roll as well^[24]. Another move took her to 124 Princes Street by 1935^[25].

Margaret married for the second time to Charles Albert Cook on 23 July 1937^[26]. He was an old sea captain and ran a boarding house at Waikawa with Margaret. In 1838 she was a married woman living at Waikawa, being listed on the Mataura Supplementary Electoral Roll^[27]. In 1941 her husband was a fisherman, both being listed on the Mataura General Electoral Roll^[28].

Her husband Charles died on on 17 August 1945^[29] at Waikawa.

In about 1947 she was at either the Wingatui or Invercargill Races and met an old boyfriend, Jack Scott. He had courted her as a teenager and had even asked her to marry him, but, when he asked her father for her hand in marriage, he was promptly ‘kicked out’ because he was a Catholic. In 1948 they married^[30]. They lived at Margaret’s cottage above the Waikawa estuary. In 1849 she and john a labourer were listed on the Awarua General Electoral Roll^[31].

Her husband John died on 27 March 1956 aged 76 years^[32] at Waikawa, Southland. In 1957 she was a widow living at 78 Sullivan Avenue, Lyttelton, being listed on the Lyttelton Supplementary No 1 Electoral Roll^[33].

Margaret died on 27 September 1961^[34] probably at Lyttelton, Canterbury. She was buried with her third husband at Waikawa Cemetery, Waikawa, Southland^[35]. The inscription reads:

In Loving Memory Of John Beloved husband of Margaret Scott Died 22nd March 1956
