Biography

Walter was one of twins born on 14 October 1852 in Fremantle, Western Australia.[1] He was the son of Charles Hanham and Caroline Martin.

He married Annie Chamberlain on 9 June 1880 at Fremantle.[1]

Annie died in 1885 and Walter went on to marry Elizabeth Cooper (widowed - nee Enright) on 2 September 1888 in Fremantle.[1]

Walter was a Mariner based in Fremantle. He worked as a pearler in 1880 and a stevedore in 1888.[1]

A very old colonist of this State in the person of Mr. Walter John Hanham pass-ed away on the 5th instant at his late resi-dence, 112 Quarry-street, Fremantle. The deceased, who was in his 73rd year, was born at Fremantle. He was a son of the late Charles G. Hanham, who arrived in this State in the ship Rockingham in 1829. From 1885 until about 1895 he was con-nected with, the pearling, industry at Sharks Bay, but apart from that he has lived at Fremantle, and has been employed on the water front. The funeral took place on Monday, the 8th instant, in the Church of England Cemetery, Fremantle, and was attended by many old identities. The last rites were conducted by Canon E. M, Collick. The chief mourners were: Mrs. W. J, Hanham (wife), Mr. A. R. Cooper (stepson); Messrs. G. and P. Han ham (brothers), Mrs. W. G. Woolgar (step daughter), Mona Woolgar. Eric R, Walter and Rupert Cooper (grand-children), Mes-dames J. H. Prosser. A. Patfield, and J. H. Stock (nieces), Mr J. H. Prosser (nephew), Mrs. L. Williams, and Messrs. H. and J. Adams, H. John and James Davis, Alex. and Charles Chamberlain and T. Hopkins (cousins).[2]
