Even though the marriage record of Rotherham Parish Church from 30 January 1809 shows William Guest marrying Martha Orgreave[1] it has not been possible to find any other documentary reference to Martha Orgreave, even after very extensive searching of multiple sources. However, there is a Martha Hargreave of suitable date of birth and geography, coming from the same village. The difference between Orgreave and Hargreave can be a simple transliteration error of a local accent when both the bride and groom were likely illiterate and unable to correct the error.
Martha Hargreave (see Research Note above) was born in Scholes, Yorkshire to Jonathan Hargreave and Frances Froggat on 7 November 1782. She was baptised in Rotherham Parish Church on Christmas Day, 25 December 1782.
Martha married William Guest, also of Scholes, in Rotherham Parish Church on 30 January 1809 [2].
Martha died of apoplexy, likely a cerebral haemorrhage on 21 February 1851. There is a headstone in Wentworth Church graveyard [3] but no burial record, with the register showing an unusual gap between consecutive entries for 19 January and then 13 April[4]. Martha's husband, William, was later, in 1860, buried in Elsecar Church graveyard.
