She never married and lived with her younger brother John's family.[2][3]
Her paternal grandmother left a bequest to all of Benjamin Hartgrove's children. While they were young the bequest was administered by several different guardians, and court documents listed the children that were alive each time the guardian changed or posted bond.[4]
A bond was posted In 1847 when Richard Rankin posted a bond as guardian for the estate due to Wm. W, James R, Jane, Robert, "Spate" (Richard), and an infant not yet named; children of Benjamin Hartgrove. The infant not yet named was probably Mary Ophelia, born in 1847.
Mary died from complications of a stroke in 1914.[5]
