Biography

Variations of the surname include Hazle, Haslet, Hayslet, Heaselett.

Moses came from Dublin, Ireland, fought in the Revolutionary War, and had three sons and one daughter. [1] Frederick Lambert notebooks about Cabell and Wayne County (West) Virginia families, found in Special Collections at Marshall University Library contain the comment: Hazlett was Irish. The name was originally spelled O'Hazlett. [2]

Military

Moses Hazlett has been reported to have served in the Revolutionary War. However, William Carlisle's pension application for service in the Revolution says he served as a substitute for Moses Hazle (sic Hazlett), his step-father, in the militia from Surry County, North Carolina. William Carlisle was born in Guilford County NC November 18, 1764 and died 5 April 1843 in Jackson Co., Tennessee. Is it possible that Rachel Campbell who married Moses Hazlett in 1772 was the mother of William Carlisle by an earlier marriage? [3] [4][5]
