Born c.1703 to Samuel* and Martha Dod, Rebekah Hedden was the first wife of the long-lived Joseph Hedden, Sr. She died in her "42nd Year", possibly from complications following the birth of their son Ebenezer. The couple were also the parents of martyred American patriot, Judge Joseph Hedden Jr. Mrs. Hedden's gravestone features a soul effigy of the "winged skull" type in its tympanum, a grim but popular image during the early colonial period. Currently embedded in the ground, it was cut from locally quarried brown sandstone, and appears to be the work of a craftsman known only as the "Common Jersey Carver." Referenced as "Samuel Dod the first", Mrs. Hedden's father was born c. 1656-7, and died c. 1713-4. She was his third daughter.

Find a Grave states: Joseph Hedden was an avid patriot and judge in Newark. He was captured in a raid by a combined British and Hessian force in January 1780, where his wife was wounded by bayonet thrusts. The Justice was forced to march with little clothing over the frozen meadows and river to New York where he was confined in the infamous Sugar House Prison. [11]
