Biography

Alfred took his elementary schooling in Lychen, but graduated in 1884 from the Joachimsthal High School in Berlin. In the same year he enrolled as an officer cadet in 3 Railway Pioneer Regt. On completion of his officer training, he received the personal approbation of the emperor. In the years prior to WWI, he received a variety of postings to broaden his knowledge of railway construction and signalling systems. From the start of the war, he spent the months from August 1914 to January 1915 on various projects on the Western Front and was posted in February 1915 to the Eastern Front, where he served until the end of the war. During the campaign in Galicia, (1915) he commanded all German Railway Companies in Austro-Hungary. Since June 1917 he was the commander of railway troops in the sector of 4 Army. He ended the war in the rank of Major. His condecorations include the Iron Cross 2nd and 1st Class, the Austrian and the Bavarian Order of Military Merit, 3rd Class.

Following the reduction of forces after WWI, he worked as a commercial agent. Details about his call up and his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel are unknown,
