Research Notes

From Thomas Jones via Ancestry: Did you know that the name "Henderson", is from Martha Elizabeth Henderson, mother of Wiley P. Jones?  Father of Wiley P. was James R. Jones?? My gr grandfather was Wiley J. Jones, brother of Wrightman H. Jones.  Wiley J., James Adkerson, and William Filgo Jones and their families stayed in Hempstead Co. Ark. when others moved to Shelby Co. TX.  These 3 and their wives and descendants are buried in Mt. Nebo Cem., Hempstead County. I have found it interesting that Wrightman H. Jones was a brother-in-law to Wrightman Pridgeon Cox who was listed in the household of Wiley Pridgeon Jones in the 1860 census of Springhill Twp., Hempstead Co., Ark.   Your Wrightman H. Jones married Mary Louisa "Polly" Grindle.  Her sister, Sarah Ann Grindle, married Fulker Cox, brother of Wrightman Pridgeon Cox.   It appears to me the Jones and Cox families have been close for maybe 200 years.  Several Jones, Cox and Powell in-laws marched together June 19, 1862 from near Buckner, Ark. to Magnolia, Ark. with their rifles and bedrolls, food, etc. and enlisted in Company G, 33rd Ark. Infantry, in the CSA as follows:

  • * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *On June 19, 1862 Wiley J. Jones enlisted in the Army of the Confederacy. He served in Company G, Mitchell's Company, 33rd Arkansas Regiment, also known as Grinstead's Regiment. Several of his brothers and brothers-in-law met at the home of Caleb Powell, Wiley's father-in-law, and they marched together about 10 miles to Magnolia to enlist. Enlistment records are as follows:
