Gideon was born in the Shetland Islands in 1836. He was a seafarer and married Barbara Thomson and they had several children. Around 1875 he emigrated with his wife and children to New Zealand, where they settled in Lyttelton. He worked on the breakwater and subsequently acquired a farm where he spent most of the rest of his life. He died in 1918 at Lyttelton and was buried at Lyttelton Cemetery.

Born in the Shetland Islands in 1836, seafarer until 43 years ago when he came to New Zealand with his wife and family in the ship Seeker, settling in Lyttelton where he worked on the breakwater until he acquired a farm on the south side of the harbour where he resided until a few months before his death. Wife pre-deceased him by 10 months. Leaves a grown-up family of eight: Mr J. R. Henderson (Ohoka), Mr D. Henderson (Prebbleton), Mr G. Henderson (Charters Bay), Mrs H. Gardiner (Purau), Mrs D. Sinclair (Lyttelton), Mrs F. H. Simpson (Tai Tapu), Mrs A. Dowell (Christchurch), and Mrs P. Dowell (Greymouth).
