Biography
Stephen was the sixth child born to John and Elizabeth (Tarter) Henderson. In approx. 1835 he left the family farm in Wythe, to become a brick-mason for 10 years, before going to work in the Wisc. lead mines. In 1846 Stephen went Memphis TN, where he was making bricks, for six months, prior to entering the U.S. service in the Mexican War. His service was brief due to poor health and he returned to Virginia.
In 1850 Stephen moved to Galatin MO for two years, then moved on to work in the lead mines in, Jasper Co, MO, for a year. After returning to Virginia for approx a year he went to California and pursued mining opportunities for about three years. In 1858 he returned to Wisc. briefly then back to Jasper Co MO, before traveling to Texas.
In 1863 he back in Wisconsin with the Federal army as a teamster and joining Sherman on his "march to the sea". After his army service he went to Tunnelton, Lawrence Co, Indiana then on to Jackson County where in married Sorada in 1873.[1] They had no children and I have no death date for Stephen. [2]
Note: , was Elizabeth's last name Tarten, Tarter or Darter? My original entry was Tarten, but only finding records of Wythe with Tarter and Darter families. Also have seen family trees with a John Hendersen marrying both Elizabeth Tarter and Darter. Where there families of each name or where the records misreading D's and T's??? The marriage records for Wythe list many folks of each name. Where there two John Henderson, one marrying E Tarter and the E Darter?
