Biography

John William Hill Jr. was born on 4 Jul 1856 in Grant County, Kentucky. He passed away on 5 Apr 1930 and was buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery, Elkins, Washington County, Arkansas. [1]

24 Jul 1860: John W. Hill Jr. first shows up on census records in the 1860 Kenton County, Kentucky census, District 1, living with his parents John W. Hill Sr. age 27 and Nancy Serena Stone Hill age 23. His siblings listed are Nancy Hill age 7, Mary Hill age 6, Cynthia Hill age 1, and Sarah J. Hill age 1/12.[2]

He was married first to Nancy Howell in Grant County, Kentucky on Dec. 25, 1882. As of this edit on May 23, 2024, I have just learned about a DNA match that shows John William Hill Jr. and Nancy Howell had children that I wasn't aware of until now. I will edit to add more information as I verify these connections.

John W. Hill Sr. moved his family from Grant County, Kentucky, to Effingham County, Illinois. It appears that he and his mother, Mary Potter Hill, purchased land to the west of the city of Effingham, in the area of Ewington and Funkhouser, in the mid or later 1880s. John William Hill Jr. was no longer married to Nancy Howell (I'm not sure if it was because of a divorce or Nancy's death), and moved to Effingham as well. In Effingham County, John William Hill Jr. married Minnie Byrum on Dec 6, 1894.

Sometime around 1904, John W. Hill moved to the Durham, Washington County, Arkansas area. Here, he was living near his uncle, Ebenezer Stone, brother of his mother, Nancy Serena Stone Hill. The rest of John W. Hill's siblings remained in either Illinois or Indiana.

John William Hill Jr. died April 5, 1930, Washington County, Arkansas.
