Lewis was born in 1803 to Waller Holladay (1776–1860) and Huldah Fontaine Lewis Holladay (1781–1863). He has at least four known siblings:

• 1. John Zachary Holladay (1806–1842)
• 2. Waller Lewis Holladay (1809–1873)
• 3. Alexander Richmond Holladay (1811–1877)
• 4. James Minor Holladay (1823–1891)

Lewis Holladay married Jane G. Thompson (1804–1863) and they had at least seven children:

He is listed with his wife and five of their children on the 1850 Census in Orange County.^[8]

After the death of his wife; Jane in 1863 he was remarried to widower Mary E. Willis Garnell or Garnett on June 24, 1864 in Madison County, Virginia.^[9] (Note that his daughter Rebecca married Reuben Willis the brother of Mary in 1860). He passed away in Orange County, Virginia in 1869 and is believed to be buried in Bellefonte Cemetery in Spotsylvania County.^[10]
