  • Morgan County Georgia, Probate Records, Returns (1845-1851), pp. 348-9; 29 Dec 1847, inventory and appraisement of the estate of William B. Holloway including references to notes held by William Perkins and Prudence M. Perkins. Also note that the record is incorrectly labeled as William H. Holloway, but later corrected to William B. Holloway. Additional records in Morgan Co show that Ferris G. Anderson was granted guardianship of son James Holloway's stake in the estate.
  • The above estate inventory probate record is dated 29 Dec 1847 and includes a debt owed to Prudence Perkins. Prudence married William Perkins 5 Nov 1844. Therefore William B Holloway and Prudence must have been divorced. William B Holloway's death was estimated to be before Nov 1844, based on Prudence's marriage to William Perkins, but since Holloway's estate was not probated until the Fall of 1847, it is very likely that he was still alive when Prudence married Perkins.
  • The above estate inventory probate record included a mention of a negro man named Major. Family history notes states that Major accompanied James Gray Holloway's wife Ophelia Susan Stallings and many slaves to Bowie County, Texas after James had to leave Morgan Co GA in a hurry when he thought he had killed a man after hitting him on the head with a fence picket. The man insulted William Stallings, Ophelia's father. For his defense, William Stallings set up his son-in-law with many slaves and money. The value of this was estimated as $4190 in William's will. James had 17 slaves listed on the 1860 census. Major is buried in Redwater, Bowie Co TX.

According to a source I found in my archive, Lewis Garner and Barbara C. Garner were witnesses to the marriage of William B. Holloway and Prudence M. Garner.

  • 30 July 1827. William B. Holloway and Prudence M. Garner who signs her own consent. Surety by Lewis Garner and William B. Giles. Witnessed by Lewis Garner and Barbara C. Garner (Chiarito and Prendergast 68).

I haven't seen the primary record for this particular transcription with my own eyes, but if that's correct, then we're surely talking about the Lewis Garner and Barbara (Holloway) Garner (1807-) who were married on 4 Jun 1827 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. Barbara (Holloway) Garner (1807-) was assuredly the daughter of Gray Holloway.

There are a lot of circumstantial details here that make sense for this connection you're making to Gray Holloway, but I haven't found the smoking gun, if you will. Do you have it? Prudence Garner/Gardner and Lewis Garner (husband of Gray's daughter Barbara Holloway) may have been siblings or closely related. That would be one area to explore in Granville/Warren Co., NC and Mecklenburg Co., VA that might strengthen the case even further.

Finding Y-DNA descendants of your James Gray Holloway who might be willing to test could help as well because we already have a database of documented Y-DNA cousins to work with.

Thanks, Joe
