He was the son of Dr. John T. and Mary Horner. He was born in Webster County, MO. He married Mattie Jessee of Cassville, MO on 1 Jan 1888.

"John died at Woodard, Oklahoma September 15, 1942 at home of daughter Eva.

Some other facts I have about John Turner was he preached in the Baptist Church at Jane, MO. He performed the marriage ceremony of my great-grandparents Willie and Zora Russell. In later life he became a reader for the Christian Science Church in Joplin.

He had Horner Institutes in Rocky Comfort, Stella, Fairview and Purdy, MO. While he lived in McDonald County he served as a Presiding County Judge from Nov. 11, 1894 until Dec. 31, 1894. He also established the first School Savings Program (teachers credit union) in the US while he was teaching in Tulsa, OK. He also established a business school in Joplin, MO in 1934.

He was a very loving, caring, articulate and well educated man. He took care of his father when he became old and at the time of his death.

My mother remembers Professor Horner he died when she was a teenager. He helped her clean a big catfish she caught while they were all on the creek for a family gathering when she was about six.

He was a very respected man in the county. As I said earlier in this letter I obtained part of this information from the Minar Mechanic also from the Jan. 6, 1899 Pineville Democrat Newspaper and from a letter that Eva had written to her brothers after a trip back to Jane. Also from reading some information about the Baptist Church at White Rock.

I have always been interested in both Dr. Horner and Professor Horner since I first began hearing about them when I was a child. I found it interesting that Dr. Horner served for a time as editor of the Republican Newspaper in Barry County. I work for the McDonald County Press, Inc., at Pineville, MO. I have been the editor of the Goodman News-Dispatch for the past 18 years. The Pineville Democrat is a forrunner of our McDonald County News-Gazette (the county seat paper)."
