OPEN VERDICT. Man Found Drowned. STORY AT INQUEST. The Coronor (Mr. J. E. Chant) today held an inquiry into the death of Frederick Horner, who was found dead in the Hunter River at Lorn on August 2. Plain-clothes Constable C. E. D. Evans stated that in company with a man named Lethbridge and other police he went to the Lorn side of the Hunter River, opposite Swiney's Point, where he saw the body of the deceased lying face downwards at the edge of the water. He added that the body, which appeared to have been totally submerged, was covered with fine silt. The body was removed further up the bank, where it was examined by the Government Medical Officer (Dr. Hollywood). Inquiries revealed that Horner was a resident of Church-street, Wyong and had been unemployed for about three years. Dr. J. J. Hollywood, Government Medical Office, told of examining the deceased's body. He said the man appeared to have been dead for longer then six hours, perhaps about 24 hours. There were no marks or external violence on the body. In answer to the Coroner, Dr. Hollywood said it was possible deceased had been going to the river for a drink of water. Charles Herbert Wilson, a butcher of Queen-street, Lorn, said that on August 1, he picked deceased up on his way home to breakfast, and took him to his home. He had known Horner for a number of years. He did not think Horner was the type of man who would take his own life. He was not addicted to drink, and was a married man with four to six children. His family was in a bad way, and always had been poor. At the conclusion of the evidence, the Coroner found that Horner died from drowning, but how or by what means he came to be drowned the evidence adduced did not enable him to say.[8]
