Johannes was the son of a smith in Ingelstorp, south Sweden. He grew up in Ingelstorp, and lived there until 1871, when he emigrated. His widowed mother followed two years later, along with Johannes' sister and her family.
Johannes and his extended family settled in Forest City, Winnebago, Iowa. There, he worked as a blacksmith. He married Ingrid Löfdahl, another Swedish immigrant.
In the 1880 census, he is living in Forest City, with his wife, mother, and father-in-law.[1]
In 1900, he lived in Forest Citywith his wife and three daughters.[2]

In the 1915 state census, he is listed as a blacksmith in Forest City, owning a farm, and a naturalized citizen. His religious affiliation is listed as Baptist.[4]
In 1920, Johannes and Ingrid lived in Forest City with three adult daughters.[5]
