At some point after 1871 Joseph's surname was changed from 'Ibbotson' to 'Burkinshaw'[3]. Joseph, along with his siblings, appear as 'Ibbotson' in the 1871 Census, shown below but in later Census records appear as 'Burkinshaw'. Their mother Mary Ann Burkinshaw died in 1872 of Phtisis (Tuberculosis) in Penistone Union Workhouse[4] and it is assumed that four of her children, including Joseph, were admitted to the workhouse with her as they were recorded as being resident there at a Christening in 1875, when they were Christened 'Burkinshaw', as detailed below.
A Christening for Joseph Ibbotson is recorded as taking place on 21 March 1872 at Bolsterstone, Yorkshire [5]. The date of this Christening would make him approx. 6 years old, relatively old to be Christened but two of his siblings; Albert (Ibbotson) Burkinshaw (1868-1913) and Mary (Ibbotson) Hickinson (1871-1940) were Christened at the same place on the same date - the reasons for this are not clear. However, Mary would have been approx. 10 months old and their mother, Mary Ann (Burkinshaw) Ibbotson (1837-1872), died on 12 June 1872 of phthisis (tuderculosis), a few months after the Christenings and her illness might have had some influence on the Christenings, especially for the older children.
A second Christening is recorded for 24th September 1875 when Joseph and three of his siblings were Christened 'Burkinshaw' at St. John the Baptist church, Penistone, Yorkshire. Their abode is recorded as 'Penistone Union', a workhouse in Penistone, Yorkshire[6][7].
The baptism record for Joseph's half-sister, Clara, in 1876[8] shows her mother's name as 'Burkinshaw' and that she was a spinster, suggesting that the relationship with Joseph Ibbotson had ended or that she was never married to him (no documentary evidence has been found, to date, to confirm that Joseph Ibbotson and Mary Ann were actually married). Having said that, as Clara was illegitimate, her mother would have been called Burkinshaw and a spinster at the time of Clara's birth. Clara's baptism record also shows her residence as Thurgoland, the last known residence of Mary Ann's parents, John and Hannah Burkinshaw. As Mary Ann passed away on 12 June 1872 it might be that Clara was living with her grandparents at this time.
The 1881 census confirms that Joseph's brother Albert, and sister Mary, were inmates in the Penistone Union Workhouse[9][10][11]. By that time of the 1881 Census, Joseph and his brother Mark had left the workhouse. In the 1881 Census, Joseph is shown as a butcher's apprentice with the Roebuck family in Penistone, Yorkshire[12].
Joseph married Ann Rowley on 18 April 1892 at St Augustine's parish church, Scissett, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England[13].
Joseph had a butcher's shop in Scissett, Yorkshire[14]. He was also the Superintendent of the 'Scissett Mission Society' for over 30 years[15].

Joseph Burkinshaw passed away in Scissett, Yorkshire in 1956
[16][17].
Research Notes
It is acknowledged that on Joseph's marriage certificate[13] his father's name is given as Joseph Burkinshaw whose occupation is recorded as 'Quarryman', the same occupation as Joseph Ibbotson. Joseph Ibbotson was deceased at this time therefore the name Joseph Burkinshaw could have been an assumption by the recorder or done in the interests of 'respectability'. (No records have been found, to date, of a Joseph Burkinshaw that could, without reasonable doubt, be the father of Joseph Ibbotson/Burkinshaw).
The 1891 Census records the family's address as Crown Street, Skelmanthorpe. Crown Street is actually in Scissett, the next village to Skelmanthorpe.
