A boy named Frank Ifield, aged about 12, was accidentally shot about midday yesterday. He was a few yards behind a companion named Babington, when the latter's gun, which he was carrying on his shoulder, went off, the charge lodging in Ifield's head. The injured boy was brought into the hospital, and expired about 8 o'clock An inquest was held this afternoon. The accident occurred at Kingsdale. Arthur Babington, the boy who shot deceased, and a younger brother were also present. Arthur Babington deposed that he had been in the habit of shooting for about five months. He was about to have a shot at a tree when his brother told him not to waste the cartridge He did not fire, but put the gun over his shoulder, and two or three minutes after it went off. He had the gun at full cock when going to fire at the tree, but he thought he put it down. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and added a rider that steps should be taken to prevent boys carrying such a dangerous weapon as the pea rifle produced Ifield was an only son, and he had a sister who is married to Babington's elder brother.^[3]
