Biography

Sussex (historic flag, adopted 2011)
Richard Infield was born in Sussex, England.

Richard was born about 1598 in West Hoathly, Sussex, probably in Gravetye Manor, which his father, Richard Infield, had built for his mother, Katherine Compton, earlier that year.[1] On 24 February 1619, the younger Richard married Catherine Colepeper, aka Katherine Culpeper, in Ardingley, Sussex.[2] When his father died later that year, he inherited Gravetye Manor.[3]

Richard's wife died in October 1623,[4] leaving him no children. When he died only a few months later on 1 April 1624, he named his younger brother James as his heir. James inherited not only Gravetye but all his brother's manors and lands in East and West Hoathly and East Grinstead, Sussex.[3] Gravetye Manor, which remained in the Infield family until the late seventeenth century, is now a hotel registered on the National Heritage List for England.[5]

The will names other family members, including his sisters Agnes Faulkoner, Bridgett Infield, and Cordell (Cordelia) Infield, as well as his nephew and godson, Inningfield Falconer, and his uncle, Sir John Compton.[3]

Both Richards were ironmasters. [6] In May 1863, the cast iron slabs marking the graves of Richard and his father were featured in an exhibit of antiquities and works of art by Ironmongers Hall, London. The inscription on Richard Jr.'s slab reads: "Here lyeth the body of Richard Infeld gent who departed his life the 11 of March Ano Do 1624."[7]

Note

Richard's inquest post mortem (cited above) gives his death date as 1 April 1624, but the cast iron grave marker gives the date as 11 March 1624. It also names his brother John as his heir but later states that all farms and manors go to his brother James.
