Biography

The #2 Marriage to Mary Elizabeth Sanders is rather confusing.: Mary Ingles married Samuel Major Saunders on this date of 23 Sept 1814 Montgomery County VA. However, John's will names a wife as Elizabeth, not Margaret.

It seems that Mary and Major Saunders are deceased when John writes a codicil to his will, as he gives daughter Lucy T. Hail a slave Bill or $500 due her from Major Saunders whole sum. Later he mentions again the slaves from Major Saunders whole, but does not mention daughter Mary, although at one point he says "my daughters."

The Alleghany Turnpike, chartered in 1805. John Ingles and Andrew Lewis, Montgomery County's delegates, sponsored the bill incorporating the turnpike "because the cost of maintaining the previous public road in good condition had proved too great a burden on the laboring tithables."
