Rhoda Jamison Lovell was born in 1808 in Franklin Co., Virginia, the probable daughter of Samuel Jamison and Winifred Bird.[1]
She married Garner C. Heard on 12 Nov 1834 in Franklin Co., Va.[2] Their children were Elizabeth (1835–1853) and Nancy Garner (1838–1892). Garner passed away before 1847 in Henry or Franklin Co.
In 1847, she married John J. Lovell. Their children were Mary Winnie, Samuel M., Lucy Ann, and Susan Victoria.[3]
John was a farmer in Henry Co., Va. On the Slave Schedule of the 1850 census, he was named with fifteen enslaved people: two men in their 30s, three women, ages 15-28; five boys, ages 6-12; and five girls, ages 4-9.[4]
John passed away on 19 Feb 1858 in Reed Creek Village, Henry Co., Va.[5][6] Rhoda was on the 1860 census (widowed, age 50) in Dyers Store, Henry Co.
She was listed on the Slave Schedule that year with eleven enslaved people: a man of 50, four women, ages 15-32; three boys, ages 1-9; and three girls, ages 1-6.[8]
On the 1870 census in Martinsville, Henry Co., she was on the census with her four children.[9] In 1880, still in Martinsville, she was living with her son Samuel and his family.[10]
Rhoda was mentioned on a memorial in Lovell Cemetery, Reed Creek Village, Henry Co., with a death date of 24 Nov 1897.[11]
