Biography

Fred Jary was born in Mattishall, Norfolk, England.

Fred was born in June 1865 in Mattishall, Norfolk, England. His birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1865 in the Mitford district.^{[1] [2]}

In the 1871 census Frederick (age 6) was the son of Thomas Webster living at 1 Hall Green, Mattishall, Norfolk, England.^[2]

By 1881 at the age of 15 Fred was an Agricultural Labourer living with his family at 3 Yaxham Road, Mattishall, Norfolk, England.^[3]

Fred joined the Metropolitan Police Force on 1st September 1890 and served with L Division.^[4]

In 1891, aged 25, Constable Fred Jary was was living with other officers at the Police Station at Newington St Mary, London, England.^[5]

Fred married Mary Eleanor Wolfe on 8th March 1894 at St Stephen's Church, Walworth London. His father was named as Thomas Jary and hers as George Wolfe.^[6]

On 29th December 1898 Fred was seriously wounded whilst on duty. He was hit on the side of the head by a revolver when apprehending a suspicious character. His left ear and eye were both affected and he was left with scarring on his right side^[7][4]

Fred was discharged from the police force with a pension on 9th February 1901. His address at the time was 262 Penton Place, Newington but his future home was to be in Mattishall.

A few weeks later the 1901 census shows that Fred and his family were in Bourne, Lincolnshire, staying with his mother-in-law. His occupation was given as "Temporaray Pensioner, Met Police". ^[8]
