Biography

Henry was born in Stithians, Cornwall, England, in 1831, son of Solomon Jenkin (1796) and Honor (Bishop) Jenkin (1792).[1]

Henry's siblings were ...

  • Mary Ann Jenkin (1817–Decd)
  • Eliza Jenkin (1819–1819)
  • Eliza Jenkin (1821–Decd)
  • Elizabeth Jenkin (1823–Decd)
  • Susan Jenkin (1824–Decd)
  • James Jenkin (1826–1894)
  • Solomon Jenkin (1829–Decd)
  • William Jenkin (1834–1870)
  • Francis Jenkin (1836–Decd).

In 1841 Henry was residing with his parents and siblings in Stithians.[2]

Henry immigrated to Australia arriving prior to 1860.

Henry married Hannah Robinson in 1862.[3] Henry was aged 31 years when he married Hannah who was somewhat older at 40 years, and they subsequently didn't have children of their own.

On the 26 February 1880 Henry's wife, Hannah, became a foster parent of a 15 month old infant, Emma Victoria (Knowles) Mentiplay (1878-1945), formerly known as Emma Matilda Mary Knowles. This child had been deserted by its mother, Mary Jane Knowles (nee' Clark) and left with an unnamed woman before becoming a Ward of the State of Victoria.[4]

Records suggest that fostered daughter, Emma, remained a ward of the State for 14 years during which time she was obliged to do piecework in return for her care. This work outplacement was done between 19 March 1892 & 14 March 1895 whilst residing at the Brookside Girls Reformatory.[5]

Emma appears to have returned to reside with Hannah and Henry until she married and thereafter used the name Jenkin throughout her life, rarely using her birth name, Knowles. Indeed she regarded herself as the daughter of Hannah and Henry and held them in high regard. Apart from the fact that Emma was known by the family name Jenkin, and indeed used that name on most formal documents, there isn't any formal record to suggest that her birth name was ever changed by deed poll.

He passed away in Chewton, Victoria, in 1900.[6]
