He was actively interested in public affairs and was a member
of the first Anti-slavery Association in 1835, becoming a close personal friend of Charles Sumner, Wendell Phillips, Governor John A. Andrew and John A. W. Gittier. In 1849 he established himself as a Bookseller, Stationer and Publisher in Boston and while in this business published /wiki/Uncle_Tom%27s_Cabin Uncle Tom's Cabin, in 1852.
