Immigration and Origins

John Johnson and his brothers Robert and Thomas, settled early in New Haven Colony. They are said to have come from Hull, Yorkshire, England.[1] John was associated with Reverend Ezekiel Rogers and his company, who arrived in Massachusetts in 1638 and were invited to travel to New Haven with Eaton and Davenport, but instead founded the town of Rowley.

Boston

27. 4. 1638 John Jolliffe and William Chesebrough granted a house and lot next to Mr Cotton "in nature of a mortgage" to four Yorkshire men and their heirs[2]

7 Oct 1639 (after he and Punderson move to New Haven) "Thomas Barker, John Johnson, Francis Lambert, and John Punderson & William Chcsebrough sell the house dwelling house and lott conteyning neare an acre lying in Boston next adjoyning to Mr Cotton's lott to Srgeant Thomas Savage of Boston & his heires."[2]

New Haven

John Johnson signed the fundamental agreement of New Haven 4 June 1639. He hadn't been admitted as a planter on the first day of the proceedings leading up to the signing. A covenant was drawn up the first day and John and several others agreed to said covenant on the 4th.[3]

He had a homelot in the top middle square,[4] and after his death was granted a lot in the East Meadow 17 March 1741.[3]

Death

14 May 1640. Thomas Barker and Francis Lambert gave Srgt Thomas Savage "releases and acquittances for themselves and John Johnson's children." [5]

3 Nov 1641. Robert Johnson made a claim "to the house and lott of his brother John Johnson, late planter of this towne deceased, by vertue of a contract betwixt them." [3]
