Sarah was born before 1817. She was enslaved by Nathan Atkinson (1758-1817) in Camden County, Georgia, on the Black Hammock Plantation. Her age is unknown, so "before 1817" is being used until dates can be determined. Her last name appears to be Kitt as it was listed in Nathan Atkinson's will as such.
Nathan Atkinson owned Black Hammock Plantation, a 700 acre property in Camden County, Georgia. He passed his Black Hammock plantation on to his son, Alexander Atkinson (1796-1840), including 21 slaves, when he died in 1817. Other property and slaves were given to his wife, Sarah Letitia (Stevens) Atkinson, and other children, John Atkinson, Nancy Ann (Atkinson) Lang and Edmund Nathan Atkinson Sr. All the slaves were to remain on Black Hammond Plantation until the crops were harvested.[1]
Sarah was one of the slaves bequeathed to Alexander Atkinson. She most likely remained on Black Hammock Plantation, but there is a possibility she may have been moved to Alexander's other plantation, Boggy Swamp, at some point.
