Maestro Gerardo (Gerlando) L'Ala is born around 1750 in Corleone, named after his paternal grandfather. He is the son of Maestro Onofrio l'Ala and Brigitta lo Curto.
His father, born in Raffadali, has died by around 1765 or 1766, when Gerardo's oldest sister marries. A census of this time shows Brigitta l'Ala, 57 (b. 1708), living on the strada di San Leoluca with her children Luciano, 18 (b. 1747), Gerlando, 15 (b. 1750), Francesca, 11 (b. 1754), Carmela, 8 (b. 1757), Giuseppa, 12 (b. 1753), and Michaele, 6 (b. 1759). They live with her son-in-law Maestro Onofrio Salpetro, 23, and his wife, Brigitta's daughter Antonina, 20 (b. 1745).
Maestro Gerardo marries Giuseppa Santoro on 18 August 1788.
His parents have both died by this time.
Gerardo and Giuseppa have at least eleven children: Brigitta (1790), Antonia Maria (1792), Carmela Maria (1794), Maria Antonia (1797), Grazia (1799), Onofrio (1802), Leoluchina (1804), Luigi (c. 1806), Giuseppe Maria (1808), Vincenzo (1811), and Stefana (c. 1812).
Brigitta Carmela Maria is born and baptized 4 February 1790, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Maestro Antonino and Grazia Valenti, a married couple.[1]
Antonia Maria is born and baptized 15 April 1792. Her godparents are Don Giovanni Botta and Donna Orsola Rocche', brother and sister. Antonia is named after her maternal grandmother. She is presumed to have died by the time her sister is born in 1797.
Carmela Maria is born and baptized 25 August 1794. Her godparents are Maestro Antonino Provenzano and Giuseppa Virdina, wife of Rosolino.
The birth year of Luigi (c. 1806) is based on his reported age in the 1811 stato delle anime, a Church census.
Maria Antonia is born and baptized 7 February 1797. Her godparents are Maestro Francesco and Giovanna Santoro, a married couple.
Grazia is born and baptized 16 April 1799. Her godparents' names are hard to read. It appears that Maestro Antonino Valenti and Angela Ingrassia, a married couple, stand as their proxies.
Grazia dies on 8 August 1801 at two years of age.
Onofrio is born and baptized 12 March 1802, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Maestro Felice and Mariana Catanzaro, represented by Biagio and Anna Costa, a married couple.
Leoluchina is born and baptized 1 October 1804. Her godparents are Francesco Morello and Maria Ficarrotta, the midwife.
Giuseppe Maria is born and baptized on 25 February 1808. His godparents are Maestro Baldassare and Rosa Vinci, a married couple.
In 1811, living out (esce) in the strada di Sarzana, is Maestro Gerlando l'Ala, 56 (b. 1755), his wife Giuseppa Santoro, 42 (b. 1769), their children Brigitta, 16 (she is 21), Maria Antonina, 14 (b. 1797), Onofrio, 10 (b. 1801), Leoluchina, 7 (b. 1804), Luigi, 5 (b. 1806), and Giuseppe Maria, 4 (b. 1807).
In the next household is his widowed sister, Francesca di Grigoli, 53 (b. 1758), living with her daughter, Brigitta, 14 (b. 1797), and their sister Carmela l'Ala, 55 (b. 1756). The 1811 record does not define Carmela's relationship to Francesca, but the 1812 record does. Carmela Maria (b. 1794) and Grazia (b. 1799) do not appear in either census, and are presumed to have died by 1811.
Vincenzo is born and baptized on 10 July 1811. His godparents are Maestro Gaetano Caruso and Paola Collura.
Vincenzo dies on 21 August 1812 at thirteen months of age.
Stefana is known from the 1812 stato delle anime.
In 1812, Gerlando still lives next door to Francesca di Grigoli, though the stato delle anime describes where they live as on the strada di San Leoluca, near the vanella (alley) di Sarzana. Gerlando, his wife, and children have all aged two years since the 1811 record. The youngest child, Stefana, is one year old.
Giuseppa dies at around age 54 (b. 1766) on 25 December 1820. Maestro Gerlando survives her.
Maestro Onofrio marries Francesca Rasizzo on 8 May 1823.
Donna Maria Antonia, wife of Don Giuseppe Falconeri, dies, reportedly at age 24 (she is 32) on 24 February 1829.
Giuseppe dies at age 21 on 12 June 1829.
Death of Gerlando
Maestro Gerlando dies at age 76 (b. 1753) on 1 August 1829.
Leoluchina marries twice, first to Antonino di Leo. She marries Carmelo Trombadore on 2 January 1854. Gerardo has died by this time.
