Walter was born in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England, in 1885. He was the son of UNKNOWN Latherton and (Richard W. Latheron and Mary Unknown). He was enumerated in the 1891 and 1901 census residing with his family in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.

Walter married Elizabeth Kidger in 1909. The marriage was registered in the third quarter in Middlesbrough. William and Elizabeth appear in the 1911 census residing with Elizabeth's family in Middlesbrough. Walter declared his occupation as "Striker Blacksmith".

Walter passed away in 1969. His death was registered in the first quarter in Teesside South, Yorkshire.
