Biography

Nancy was a teacher and high school principal

Nancy was born on St. Patrick's Day in 1937. She passed away on October 10, 2010. ^[1]

Nancy spent nearly her entire life in Decatur, Illinois. She spent part of her high school years in Victorville, California while her father served in the US Air Force during the Korean War.

Education and Career

Nancy graduated from Decatur High School in 1955. She then attended Millikin University in Decatur and graduated in 1960. She later earned a Masters degree in her field of Education. She accepted a teaching position with a newly opened MacArthur High School. She spent her entire career at MacArthur High School. She started as physical education teacher and moved on to counselor and dean of girls. She finished her career as Principal at MacArthur. She was the first female principal in the school district.

Family

Nancy was mother to one son, Martin "Marty" Stuart Lenover. He was born on April 22, 1957. She was in college and unmarried when Marty was born. She took a year off school while she was pregnant. The birth father was not involved in Marty and Nancy 's life.

Nancy and Marty lived with her parents until, after a short courtship Nancy married George "Bill" William Acks in 1968. In 1971, Bill adopted Marty and he took the name Martin Stuart Acks. Bill had one son, Ron Acks, from his first marriage.

Later Years

In her retirement she continued to volunteer for the Decatur Public School District and later at the Decatur Memorial Hospital. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandson, Brian. Nancy died of complications due to lung cancer.^[2] She was laid to rest at Camp Butler National Cemetery outside Springfield, alongside her husband Bill.

Nancy Acks Memorial Brick

A memorial brick was placed on the grounds of MacArthur High School by her friends and family.

Nancy and a fellow teacher also started a college scholarship for a young female athletes from MacArthur. That scholarship continues to be granted to this day.
