Isabella was born about 1811. She was the daughter of David Lionberger and his wife Mary Brubaker. She was orphaned, losing both parents in her minority.
She was first married 21 July 1828 to Dr. John Simms with the consent of her guardian Peter Hay. Her brother John Lionberger attested to Hay being her lawfully appointed guardian and signed the bond for her marriage.
John and Isabella were residing in Luray of then Shenandoah County, Virginia when John passed away 17 September 1828 at the home of his sister in Culpeper County, Virginia. His nuncupative will, witnessed by his sister, Matilda J. Jones, was presented to the Court 17 December leaving his entire estate to his beloved wife Isabella. John Simms appointed his dear friend, and brother-in-law, Edmund Broadus to sell his property for Isabella's benefit.
Having been widowed after just two months of marriage...Isabella was quickly thereafter married to Reverend Andrew Broaddus, brother to Edmund Broaddus. It seems probable she was suspected to be with child. She was mother to numerous children by her second marriage when again widowed in 1868.
Isabella did not remarry. She was residing in the household of her son, Andrew Broaddus during the U.S. Federal Census of 1870 and 1880. She passed away in his home at about age 82 in 1893, per her obituary published in The Richmond Dispatch, 20 December 1893.
