Biography

September 22, 1790 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was born on Reynolds Street, Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. [1] [2]

Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was a son of William Longstreet and Hannah Randolph. [3]

He was a lawyer, minister and author. He wrote "Georgia Scenes, Characters, Incidents, Etc, in the First Half Century of the Republic."

1813 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet graduated from Yale University. [4]

Augustus Baldwin Longstreet studied law at the law school, Lichtfield, Connecticut. [5]

1815 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was admitted to the Bar at Richmond County (Augusta), Georgia. [6]

After 1815 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet moved to Greensboro, Greene County, Georgia. [7]

March 3, 1817 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet and Frances Eliza Parke married at Georgia. Frances Eliza Parke was from Greensboro, Greene County, Georgia. [8]

1820 -- U. S. Census

1821 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was elected to represent Greene County the Georgia State Legislature. [9]

1822 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was elected a Judge of the Ocmulgee Judicial District, Georgia. [10]


1830 -- U. S. Census

Augustus Baldwin Longstreet moved from Greensboro, Greene County, Georgia to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia where he founded the newspaper, "Augusta Sentinel." [11]

1838 -- the newspaper, "Augusta Sentinel" merged with the "Chronicle." [12]

1838 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was ordained a Minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. [13]

1839 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was elected President of Emory College, Oxford, Newton County, Georgia. [14]

1840 -- U. S. Census

1840 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet'a "Georgia Scenes, Characters, and Incidents, etc. in the First Half Century of the Republic by a Native Georgian," a series of newspaper articles were collected together and published as a book. Reportedly, Longstreet disavowed the book and tried to have it suppressed. [15]

1844 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was a member of the general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. [16]

1848 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was elected President of Centenary College of Louisiana, Jackson, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana (now part of Baton Rouge). [17]


1850 -- U. S. Census, Lafayette County, Mississippi

Circa 1850 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was elected President of the University of Mississippi, Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi. He held that post for six years then resigned to pursue agricultural interests. [18]

1857 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was elected President of the South Carolina College, Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina (now the University of South Caroline at Columbia). [19]

Circa 1860 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was elected President of the University of Mississippi, Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi. [20]

1860 --

1864 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet published at Macon, Georgia, the story "Master William Mittens." [21]

1867 -- second edition of Augustus Baldwin Longstreet'a "Georgia Scenes, Characters, and Incidents, etc. in the First Half Century of the Republic by a Native Georgian," was published as a book. [22]

September 9, 1870 -- Augustus Baldwin Longstreet died at Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi. [23] [24]
