Biography

Richard was the grandson of MP George Longville, and his heir. He died soon after him, and his own heir was his son John.

His IPM has not yet been published in a modern calendar, though an older Latin summary has been printed.[1] Unfortunately these summaries contain no family information, but it is useful to compare it to the IPM of George a few years earlier.[2]

Some of the basic facts for his father according to Woodger:[3]

  • marriage #1 (before November 1414): Elizabeth (c.1397-c.1426), daughter and coheir of Thomas Roche of Castle Bromwich, Warwickshire and Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir Thomas Birmingham of Birmingham
  • They had 1 son Richard who died before his parents, and 1 daughter
  • marriage #2 (bef. 1434): Margaret, daughter of John Sutton, 1st Lord Dudley
  • They had 1 son George (born about 1434) and 2 daughters
  • Three married daughters in 1448: Elizabeth, wife of James Swetenham, Elizabeth, wife of John Dyve and Anne, wife of John, son of John Mortimer.

According to the Victoria County History of Northamptonshire:[4]

  • Elizabeth daughter of Thomas de la Roche and Elizabeth daughter of Sir Thomas Birmingham, kt., brother of Sir John married George Longueville
  • "After the death of Elizabeth George Longueville married Margaret daughter of his overlord, John (Sutton) Lord Dudley; he was succeeded in the estate called KINGSTON LONGUEVILLE in 1458 by Richard son of his son Richard, who died in the same year, leaving a son John, aged fifty days."

According to the Victoria County History of Wolverton, in Buckinghamshire:[5]

He [George, MP] settled the whole manor in 1448 on his younger son George, with remainder to Richard son of his elder son Richard in tail-male and further remainder to his daughters. The younger George had livery of the manor from Edward IV in 1461, his father having died in 1458. In 1485 or 1486 his cousin John Longville, son and heir of Richard son of Richard, and therefore holder of the reversion on the failure of heirs to George, made a forcible entry on the manor. He apparently succeeded in ousting his kinsman or in buying him out, for on the death of George in July 1499 he held only tenements in Stony Stratford and Wolverton of Sir John Longville as of his manor of Wolverton, and immediately afterwards (7 August) Sir John had a release from Richard son and heir of George of all his claim on the manor.

Based on the various records and VCH interpretations:

  • John Longville
  • George I Longville. d. 1458. MP and lord of Wolverton
  • Richard Longville. Son of Margery Sutton. Predeceased his father.
  • Richard II Longville. d. 1458
  • John Longville. Eventual lord of all Wolverton.
  • George II Longville. d. 1499. Son of Elizabeth la Roche. Had Wolverton settled on him, but was only a tenant of his cousin when he died.
  • Richard son of George Longville. Released his claims on Wolverton in 1499 to his cousin.

Research notes

A translation of the patent roll entry for the entailment of 1488 does not seem to define the relationship of "Richard son of Richard de Longevyll".[6]

In the VCH article on Kingston Bagpuize, the specific description of Richard as son of "his son" (the elder George's son) Richard is backed up with a footnote citing an inquisition post mortem of 37 Hen. VI (1458/9), no. 28".[7] This is an IPM for one of the Richards which has not yet been published in a modern calendar, though an older Latin summary has been printed.[8] Unfortunately these summaries contain no family information, but it is useful to compare it to the IPM of George a few years earlier.[9]

Apparently what these inquisitions show is that different manors of George senior went to different sons. Dorton in Buckinghamshire apparently went straight to Richard son of Richard.[10]
