During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company E of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during the Civil War. He was about 19 years old, single and working as a boatman when he enlisted on 1 April 1863 from Reading, Pennsylvania. He was missing in action on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, and we must presume he was killed in action.[1]
