Air Commodore Joseph Aidan MacCarthy, OBE, GM was an Irish doctor of the Royal Air Force and a prisoner of war to the Japanese during the Second World War who survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945.

Joseph Aiden MacCarthy was born on March 19, 1913 in Castletownbere, County Cork, Ireland.[1] His parents were Denis Florance McCarthy and Julia Mae Murphy.

Aiden served in World War II. [4]. In 1941, at Honington Air Base in Suffolk, England where he was stationed and was awarded the George Medal for bravery for rescuing a crew from a burning aircraft. A year later, Aiden was sent to North Africa and to the Far East, where he was captured by the Japanese at Java. The prison ship he was on was torpedoed by the Americans, and he spent 24 hours in the water before being rescued by another prison ship which took him to the Japanese mainland. Only 30 of the 1,000 men on board the ship survived.

He married Kathleen Wall from County Galway, Ireland in Westminister in 1948.

Aiden died on October 11, 1995 in Northwood, London, England, United Kingdom, aged 82. He was buried in Droum Cemetery, Castletown Bearhaven, County Cork.[5] [1]
