Biography

Eliza went to Boston to work when she was young as did many of her generation. The Daily Examiner, July 28, 1882: Steamer Carroll, to Boston, Passenger List records Eliza McPhee (along with some of her cousins) Miss Mary McPhee, Miss Jessie McPherson, Miss Christy McLeod. This indicates she travelled there in 1882 when she would be 18 years old. She was in Boston in 1895 when her mother died and possibly she returned and stayed home. She married at the age of 33 and she was 45 when my dad was born. From the time he can remember she had very poor health, suffering from arthritis and heart trouble. She was educated in the Heatherdale school. Her first language was Gaelic which she read and wrote fluently. One of my most treasured possessions is her Gaelic Bible. Obituary - The Patriot: After a long illness patiently borne there passed quietly away at her home in Heatherdale on April 17th, 1931, Mrs. Lauchlan MacPhee. Mrs. MacPhee was the daughter of Angus and Mary MacPhee, Heatherdale. She born on May 2nd, 1864. Her brother Malcolm A. lives on the old homestead, and her sister Mrs. Duncan MacLeod lives in Dundas. She had a bright and cheerful disposition and beautiful Christian character and was a faithful attendant at the services of her church, She leaves to mourn their loss, her husband, and three sons, Malcolm and Charles in Lawrence, Mass., and Dan Angus at home. The eldest son, Angus John, a returned soldier, died in the West in 1927. The funeral which was very largely attended was conducted on Sunday April 19th by her minister Rev. D. M. Sinclair.
