OBITUARY - MRS G. L. BEATH.
Mrs G. L. Beath, whose death occurred at her home, 26 Gloucester street, at the age of 84 years; was one of that small band of early Canterbury settlers who are rapidly passing away. She arrived at Lyttelton in the year 1866, by sailing-ship, the journey from England taking 120 days.
Mrs Beath came of an old Highland family, and was born on the island of Islay, in the Inner Hebrides. She met Mr Beath in Scotland, and married him soon after she landed in New Zealand.
As hostess of "Leslieville," Riccarton, for over 30 years, she was well known, and her home was the meeting-place of missionaries from all parts of the world. She was a loyal member of Trinity Congregational Church, and her interest in the School of Art, and the musical societies, betokened the love of music and painting that filled a large portion of her life. Her husband, Mr George Low Beath, pre-deceased her by fifteen years, dying on August 4th, 1914 - three days after the commencement of the Great War
Mrs Beath leaves three daughters, ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
Mr George Low Beath. the founder of the firm of Beath and Co.. Ltd., the well-known drapers of Christchurch, was born in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1827. Emigrating to Australia in 1865 he engaged in the drapery trade for year. In 1866 he crossed over to New Zealand, and started a similar business in the infant town of Christchurch. He continued to be an active member of the firm until the rear of his death.
