Biography

James Bibber Mansfield was born in Portland, Maine in 1819, the son of Henry and Thankful (Bibber) Mansfield.

He married first to Abigail (Brown) Foster in 1840 (intentions published on August 4, 1840, at Harrington, Maine).[1]

He was a sea captain and trader at Milbridge.

He applied to receive a patent for his invention of a weeding machine in 1888, which was granted 12 Feb 1889. In the application he wrote, "My invention consists in a new and improved machine or implement for cutting the weeds and grass, runners, &c., from among strawberry and other light plants growing in rows."
