Biography

"Samuel Burrough... married the daughter Hannah of the last named person. This marriage occurred in 1699, at the house of Sarah Roberts, widow of John. This female was a noticeable character in her day. When the inhabitants of Chester township, Burlington county, in the year 1696, thought proper to assume the responsibilities of a corporation, Sarah Roberts was the only female that signed the agreement as one of the residents and taxpayers therein."^[1]

Sarah Roberts was widowed with young children, and instead of remarrying she assumed the responsibilities of the head of the household.

When the inhabitants of Chester incorporated, she was the only woman signer of the agreements. She was also one of the trustees of the Society of Friends in Chester. She was "a woman understanding and participating in matters generally left for the sterner sex to manage. . . her opinion was regarded and her influence sought in matters of public importance." ^[2]

For the recently widowed Sarah Roberts, this day was consolation & joy after losing her husband, for two of their daughters -- Mary and Hannah -- married in a double wedding: Mary to Thomes Eves and Hannah to Samuel Burroughs, in the girls' childhood home.^{[citation needed]}

Research Notes: Myheritage Green Family Tree gives birthplace as Ourton, Warwickshire, England. It provides a father of John Marks and a mother of Arney Bateman. That tree also includes a daughter, Sarah Core, and a son, Richard. I cannot check for sources as I have no access to Myheritage details.
