Biography

Virgil was a brick mason. He was the son of Sherrod "Sherd" Marlowe and Mary "Pollie" (Creekmore) Marlowe.

When he was enumerated in the 1900 Census for Pleasant View, Whitley, Kentucky, he was 8 years old. His father Sherd Marlowe was age 40. His mother Pollie Marlowe was age 34. His brother William O Marlowe was age 14. His brother Walter G Marlowe was age 13. His sister Rosia E Marlowe was age 10. His brother George A. Marlowe was age 6. His brother Thomas A. Marlowe was age 4. His sister Orie D. Marlowe was age 2.[1]

His father was dead before 1910. His mother Pollie was a widow with 9 children in the 1910 Census.[2]

When he registered for the World War I draft in 1917, he claimed an exemption, commenting: "I contribute to support of three orphan sisters and they need my help."[3]

Ruby Elsie Hall married Virgil Lester Marlowe 17 Apr 1919 in Marion County, West Virginia.[4]

Virgil and Ruby were living with her father, Asby Hunter Hall, in Marion County, West Virginia in 1920.[5]

In 1930 Virgil was living in Fairmont, Marion, West Virginia, at age 38. His wife was Ruby Elsie Hall. Ruby was age 38, b WV. Their daughter Margaret was age 9, b WV. Their son Billy was age 8 b WV. Their daughter Ruby was age 2, b. WV.[6]

By 1940 Virgil and his family had moved back to his native Kentucky. They were living in LaGrange, Oldham, Kentucky in 1940.[7]

He registered for the World War II draft in 1942 from LaGrange, Oldham, Kentucky. His wife was Ruby E. Marlowe. He was at that time working for the J. G. White Engineering Company of Louisville. Distinguishing marks were a scar on his right wrist.[8]
