Following the death of his father several years later the young man enlisted in the Civil war ranks in the Company H. 20th regiment of the Wisconsin volunteers and served during the entire time of the war. After his return he came to Minnesota in the fall of 1867 and settled in the Haven township, where he married in 1875, Miss Emily Hibbard. The couple lived on the Haven farm for 28 years and then moved to Granite Ledge, living there for three years after which they settled in Sauk Rapids, where the they made their home since.
G. A. R. members spoke highly this morning of the activity of Mr. Marquit in the organization since its founding, when he became a member. Civil war veterans said the deceased had served in the "Kelly Rust" regiment, one of the marked bodies of troops in the Civil war, which had fought Indians, and been engaged in many of the important battles of the conflict. As a member of the regiment Mr. Marquit "marched to the sea" under Sherman belonged to the body of troops which besieged Richmond from the south, forcing surrender of Lee.
Two daughters, Mrs. Harry Woods of Sauk Rapids and Mrs. Charles Bell of Clearwater, survive their father.
