Biography

Elizabeth McGee lists Sarah Ann along with the brothers; JW calls the only sister Elizabeth. Sarah Ann was 5 when her mother Susannah died. With no sister to care for her, she may have been taken to live with a married brother. Sarah Ann may be the girl, age 10-15, in the household of John C. in the 1840 census of Kanawha Co. She was 12 years old in 1840.

Kanawha Co. VA. marriage license: William P. Swaar and Sarah Ann Matheny, Oct 17 1844.

By the following summer Mr. Swaar had died, and Sarah Ann's brother John C. as the estate's administrator had filed suits on its behalf.

At a court held for Kanawha County at the Court House thereof on the 10th April 1848 this Appraisement Bill and Sale Bill of the Estate of William P. Swaar dec'd was this day presented in Court and ? to be recorded."

The following notice: "MARRIED, May 17, 1849, by Rev. A. Brooks, MR. MONROE P. STIVDRS (sic) of Bentonville, to MRS. SARAH A. SWOR, of this place," (Adams County Democrat, May 25, 1849) indicates that this was a second marriage for Sarah Ann Matheny. "of this place" refers to West Union, Adams Co. Ohio.

There were 5 known children of this second marriage:

Mary Stivers, Martha "Matty" A. Stivers, Charles E. Stivers, George W. Stivers, and William J. Stivers.

1850 Census, Adams Co. Ohio, Sprigg Twp. August 1850: Sarah age 26; Monroe age 25; Mary age 5 mo.

Monroe Stivers first appears in the Peoria City Directory for 1864, preceded in 1863 by George and Hiram Stivers. All three worked as coopers, but apparently in different shops, as all three have different business addresses. They were probably closely related. By 1891 Monroe and Hiram were both working as coopers for the Peoria Cooperage Co.

PEORIA DAILY TRANSCRIPT, Monday, July 9, 1894, p. 3

"DIED. STIVERS--Sarah A. Stivers, wife of Monroe Stivers, at 9 a.m. July 7, of heart disease, aged 66 years, 2 months and 7 days. Funeral Monday, July 9, 2 p.m., at residence, 208 State Street. Friends of the family invited. Ripley, Ohio, papers please copy."

Sarah A. Matheny Stivers is buried in Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, IL. No death certificate is on file. Tombstone says: Sarah A. Stivers born April 30 1828 in Adams Co Ohio
