Subject: Re: Mathena / Matheny Research
Hi Paula: FYI. Stephen Mathena in our line is not the son of Archibald. He is the son of Archibald's brother William and Sarah Ann Sims. I have about 5 pages of info that I can mail to you regarding this issue. I believe the researchers made a mistake on Archibald. I learned this from Dolores Gucciardi, a noted long-time Mathena researcher. I met her at the Mathena reunion in Stafford County, VA, three years ago. I will need to s-nail mail t though. Two of the pages may not scan well. I am putting together a package of mail to send to you.
Reasons:
1. Stephen was born 3 years before Archibald was married. His marriage is documented as Dec. 13, 1786. Stephen's birth is documented at May 21, 1783.
2. There is a family bible record in the Terre Haute, Indiana library that shows Stephen as the son of William and Sarah Ann Sims, born 21 May 1783. I will mail this to you. I downloaded this record from the Library of VA.
3. According the Gucciardi records, Stephen is not included on the Bath County, VA record of Archibald's heirs. I will send a copy Dolores' info on this also.
Both Archibald and William were in the Rev. War. Served in the Revolutionary War under Lt. Col. Houston, Lt. Col. Wooding, 4th VA Militia??

Parentage of Stephen Matheny

Many genealogies identify Rockingham County, Virginia resident Stephen Matheny (1783-1848) as the son of Archibald Matheny and Jane Curry, of Bath County, when he is the of son William Matheny and Mary Harrison, residents of Augusta/Rockingham County. Stephen, son of Archibald and Jane, was born in 1783; the 1830 and 1840 Census identify (presumed eldest male of household) Stephen Matheny of Rockingham County as being born between 1781 and 1790. It also is highly unlikely that the son of Archibald would have married Susanna Argenbright in 1809 around the age of 15 considering most males of that time did not marry until their age of majority.

Tha author believes this conclusion to be further confirmed by a family-related letter ("Exhibit B") in the Augusta County case in Adm of Polly Matheny vs Eljah Matheny etc. This letter identifies Stephen Matheny, husband of Susanna Argenbright and father of Elijah Matheny, as brother to Margaret Matheny Cool, Mary "Polly" Matheny, and Peachy Matheny, thus making him son of William Matheny and Mary Harrison rather than Archibald Matheny and Jane Curry as he has been mistakenly identified.
