Biography

William Matherly was born in 1810, son of John Matherly (1790 - ) and Patsy (McCarty) Matherly (~1797 - ~1823).

William married Dorothy Spencer (~1812 - 1888) on 21 November 1831. Shadrack Price conducted the ceremony. Dorothy (listed as Doly) was married with the consent of her mother Sally Spencer.^[1]

Their children were:

1. Cynthia (Matherly) Proctor (1831 - 1883)
2. Elias Ellsworth Matherly (1836 - 1899)
3. Sarah Matherly (1838 - )
4. Larisa Matherly (1842 - )
5. Nancy (Matherly) Fess (1843 - 1917)
6. Croda (Matherly) Robinson (1848 - 1910).

In 1840, William's household in Estill County, Kentucky contained XX free white individuals, one of whom was engaged in agriculture. One of the daughters is not listed on the census: ^[2]

2 females under age 5 (Croda and Nancy?)

2 females aged 5 to 9 (Cynthia or Sarah and Larisa)

1 female aged 20 to 29 (Dorothy)

On 27 September 1850, William and Dorothy and their children- Cyntha, Lavisa, Sarah, Elizas, Nancy, and Crody- lived in Shelby County, Tennessee. William worked as a laborer. He and Dorothy could not read or write.^[3]

Research Notes

Some trees have William with a death date of February 19, 1855, the source for William's death date is his widow's Civil War Pension Record for her second husband, Thomas Ferry, who was killed in the war. Thomas and Dorothy married in 1863, he was killed in 1864. His wife is shown alone with the younger children in the 1860 census. But then other trees have Civil War records from 1863 linked to him. He would have been about 53 at that point.
