US Census Event, 1870: Richard was living with his father Daniel, his mother Evaline, and his siblings Margaret, Mary, and William in Marietta, Ward 3, Washington, Ohio, United States, age 8. [3]
Richard was married three times. His first wife was Elizabeth (Nisley) Mathews.[4] This marriage ended in divorce. [5] They had at least two children:
His second wife was Anna May (Freeman) Holbrook Mathews. Anna's daughter from her previous marriage (private) lived with them.[7] They also had four other children: [8]
Richard's marriage to Anna ended when she died in 1908.[9]
His third marriage was to Edith Graham Mathews in 1909.[2] This marriage produced one child, David Graham Mathews, born in 1911.[10]
As a youth, Richard worked as a telegraph operator. Later he was a railroad employee. In 1909, he described his title as "General Yard Master" on his marriage record. [2] The yardmaster is the railroad employee in charge of the rail yard. They manage and coordinate all activities in combining rolling stocks into trains, and breaking down trains into individual railroad cars, and switching trains from track-to-track in the rail yard.[11][12]
He passed away at home (220 Rugby Ave. in Rochester NY) in 1921 . [13][14][15]
