Biography

Permelia Eliza Mathews, known as Liza or Lu, was born 17 May 1868 in Shasta, California, daughter of David Cope Mathews (1840-1927) and Malinda Jane Stoops (1847-1924). In about 1871 her family removed to Lane County, Oregon, where most of her siblings were born.

By 1900 Liza had relocated to Oakland, California. There on 14 Jan 1906^[1][2] she married Josiah "Joe" T Wolford (1875-1949). The couple settled in San Jose, where they lived for about eight years and Joe worked as a carpenter. Around 1914 Joe and Liza removed to Eureka, where they lived at 1529 Dean St.^[3] and then moved in with Joe's parents at 1516 Myrtle Ave.

By 1924, Joe and Liza had moved to Orleans, Humboldt County, California, in the mountains about 85 miles northeast of Eureka, where he continued doing construction work. They later moved to nearby Weitchpec. During this period they maintained ownership of their Myrtle Ave home and probably rented it out. They did not have any children. Liza passed away in Weitchpec on 2 May 1933^[4][5].
