When Lurania "Raney" Matthews Mathis was born on April 15, 1784, in Surry, North Carolina, her father, James, was 44, and her mother, Wilhelmina, was 34. She married Burrell Martin on August 14, 1804, in her hometown. They had nine children in 17 years. She died on May 6, 1826, in Surry, North Carolina, at the age of 42.
